About

In 1997, a group of practitioners came together and voiced their concerns on how young people were facing major difficulties as they moved from care to more independent living. It was clear that young people needed to be better prepared for more independent living.  Organisations needed to work together more effectively to ensure greater safety, security and guidance were available during the fragile period of transition towards adulthood.

The response to these concerns was the formation of the Scottish Throughcare & Aftercare Forum in 1998. A variety of practitioners and organisations work together to improve the life chances for young people leaving care settings in Scotland.  The organisation has created a vehicle for young people themselves to have their views heard and take an equal place beside practitioners and decision makers in discussions and throughcare & aftercare developments.

Present Situation

The work of the Forum makes a significant impact on improving the level of support for young people who are leaving care in Scotland.  This is achieved through creating networks to share good practice at a local & national level and by influencing national policy developments.  We also try to ensure that young people leaving care and those who support them can have their voice heard and play their role in improving the outcomes for young people leaving care.
